If you look on petfinder.com, you’ll see the usual array of cockeyed mutts and alley cats, but you’ll also see a startling number of purebreds; I assume that like our new puppy, many of them were being given away by people who had gotten them when the world was a much brighter place.

The I Love Susan Orlean on Dogs Blog
This blog is in danger of turning into the Susan Orlean dog-writing repository. It would be a big improvement!

there aren't too many people worse to compare oneself to. Oscar Wilde, Dorothy Parker, James Brown and Elvis were kind enough to have, at least, identifiable flaws. while I would consider a divorce if it meant I could marry Susan Orlean, we need to hear from you. about the baby.
Thank you so much for sharing the writings of Susan Orlean with us. It makes me so sad when I read how so many people view their pets as "throw aways" when it is no longer convenient to keep them. It makes me wonder what their original reason was for getting them in the first place. It is certainly not what I told my dogs when they entered my life, "well kids, you are stuck with me for life." I understand that times are very difficult for many people right now, but how people can just drive away leaving their pets to fend for themselves in an abandoned home simply leaves me speechless. But, the good news is that each of us can make a difference and this was brought to my attention when I watched the following video on dog blog that took place last Christmas: http://www.lifewithdogs.tv/2010/08/just-one-dog/ It made me cry, but it also made me realize that there are good people out there and we can all, with just one small act, make a major difference. Hope you don't mind me including it in this comment.
