No-Good Terrible Very Bad Day

Today our favorite person at P’s day care (and P’s best friend at school) was relieved of her job. I know more than I can say here but I will say that she was why we could leave Piney there while we went away on vacation. Now I don’t exactly know what we’ll do. Never leave town at the same time?

Luckily we won’t have to face this crisis for a while. We’re going on vacation next week—to Montauk—but guess what, we’re taking Piney WITH US. Unprecedented! We want a lot of backyard funtimes and kiddie pools and surfing and nothing-doing, and little if any Lyme disease. We have Frontline and a tick collar—anything else we can use to keep the ticks off of him? How about off of us?

I use the Off wipes...they are safe to use on kids so I figure they are safe for my dogs, too. Neither one have skin allergy issues, though, but I hope it'll work for Piney.

I hope you all enjoy your vacation!

Neem spray is good for both you and Piney. Ask your vet about the tick collar some I would not trust. Have a good vacation.

Neem spray is safe for you and Piney and safer than a tick collar.

I also have tried geranium essential oil spritzed with alcohol or even almond oil. Makes the dogs kinda greasy but nice-smelling.

Oh, I just saw something on TV that suggested using olive oil to smother the ticks if they get on a dog. (It may have been on the Doctors. Can I really admit to watching that?)

I hope Piney enjoys his vacation! You too.

What's a tick collar? I use Frontline Plus and so far 5 years of no ticks, knock on wood. As added protection I use this all herbal spray that on both myself and her. I'll go try to read the worn off label. It seems to work on lots of things including mosquitos. Glad you're taking Piney with you!

Ever since we jumped into the pet pool and rescued what turned in a very large dog, we've learned what "all in" means. We adore our dog, if we can't find someone to watch her, we don't go anywhere. She hates the car so we keep her rides short. Her allergies and other health issues are dealt with on the same level of love and concern as a parent for their only child.

Dogs are with us such a short time, yet they demonstrate life lessons such as forgiveness, unconditional love and how to live in the now with amazing worldliness.

Wow, these are great new suggestions I want to try myself since we too have to deal with those nasty ticks. I think Frontline gives you the best peace of mind and protection long term but, you have to really check your dog over at the end of every day to be sure it is working. I am really sorry Piney lost his best friend at the day care so I hope he has a really great time on vacation!

I believe in the Frontline rub-in stuff. word of advice: use it off-season. we used to forget about it in the cooler months because ticks are supposed to be dead (I thought) even in the "country". anyhow, when we go away, we leave (our dog) FDR with my parents who have a big yard and dog and cat friends for him to socialize with and he get a break from city living. when we picked him up once we noticed a mark on his ear that looked like a bite and took him to the vet who thought maybe a spider...because it was too cold for ticks. anyhow, a few weeks later he woke up and was too sick to stand up. frantic, we took him to the emergency vet. I had already diagnosed him (from the web) with a neurological disorder that affects some toy breeds, but mostly king charles spaniels. naturally, I locked horns with the vet, who specialized in said disease. his bloods came back and he'd tested borderline for lyme and my husband begged anti-biotics off the (very pissed-off) vet, who was dubious about the validity of the diagnosis and value of the pills and who thought I was a total nut-job. she was right on only one count: the pills worked very quickly and FDR was good as new by the next day. winter ticks. they do exist. hopefully, Pine Nut will have a good sitter by Thanksgiving so he never has to know about them.

We just got back from the Northwoods of Wisconsin, which has plenty of ticks (ugh). We Frontline both of our beasties and it really does the trick. My husband is especially neurotic about Lyme disease, so as a belt and suspenders measure, we have the vet give them a Lyme vaccination every summer. Oh and if you do need to remove a tick (double ugh), this gadget is the bomb:
