Enough Already

In response to Ann, who said:

I can't stand it! There has been no post and I am worried sick about Piney. Is he ok? Is he doing better? Please let us know.

He’s not doing better. He’s doing worse. In the middle of last night I (very gently) moved him over on the bed and he yelped in pain.

I’m starting to research hookworms. That’s how bad it is.

This is such disappointing news. I keep thinking, thinking, thinking....what could cause pain that won't show up on an x-ray. My first thought was, did he swallow something like a toy and it's obstructing his intestine. That would certainly cause him pain. But, that would also show up on an x-ray. Do hookworms cause pain? Is he hurting all over or in a specific location? I wish I had some brilliant idea that would solve this mystery for you. I hate thinking of him hurting and you desperate to help him. There is nothing worse than not knowing and him hurting. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help. I know this sounds crazy but sometimes help in researching a topic or asking another vet for any ideas can bring a fresh perspective. You and Piney are in my thoughts.

Ann, thank you so much for your kindness and your concern. I think you have a taste of how my mind has been racing around for the past few weeks.

The hookworms are actually a potential treatment, not a problem. There's a growing body of work and some anecdotal evidence that autoimmune diseases (like P's IBD) and allergies might be helped by ingesting a few hookworms. (Read the article linked from the word hookworm in my post.) It's kind of gross but completely fascinating. Unfortunately, it's also illegal to sell hookworms to regular citizens in the U.S. I'm not sure we're going to get our hands on any to try on P.

Meanwhile, thank you for your kind offer. I will let you know if I think of anything I need help researching!

XO,
Anaheed

I have grown very fond of Mr. Piney so I would be very happy to offer any help, in any way, I can. I sincerely mean that. I am obsessive about my kids (I won't say how many I have because you would think I am nuts!) but I love them dearly and I am always reading any research available on advances in veterinary science and canine health and nutition. I am fascinated by the hookworm research you mentioned so I will have to read more on that too. I am actually a research biologist so I guess I complulsively have to read any newly published research.

All of us here in the blogosphere worry about Piney when we don't hear from you for extended periods. He's a somewhat regular topic in our house since we have a little problem rescue ourselves, although thankfully we're on a smooth course these days. But waiting for the other shoe to drop as it always seems to.

I was going to tell you about this clip I heard last week on my favorite radio show about the power of hookworms... then I realized you've probably already heard it. Facinating stuff though.

You're all in our thoughts-

When I heard that hookworm story, on TAL, I pretty much wanted to get some. However, my 35 years of fairly severe allergies ended this year, for no apparent reason. Makes me wonder if I didn't accidentally ingest a hookwork or two.

Anyway, and this is probably crazy, but Piney's stomach issues made me think of this article in Slate about giving pot to an autistic kid.
